Voltage optimisation provider EcoAdapt (http://www.ecoadapt.co.uk) can reveal that an energy efficiency drive is sweeping the theatres and restaurants of Britain. The entertainment and hospitality sectors are turning to energy saving technology such as voltage regulators to help them reduce electricity costs while driving down their carbon emissions, encouraged by the publication of two new guides.
Within the entertainment/arts and cultural sector, the Theatre’s Trust and green advisory group Julie’s Bicycle has published a guide called Energising Culture in a bid to help theatres and other arts organisations in the UK strategise their aims of carbon reduction. This guide explains that energy use is a “business-critical” issue for theatres and all cultural establishments and suggests key ways in which they can harness energy saving technology to help them cut greenhouse gas emissions and bring down their energy bills. "The way theatres use and generate energy is part of their DNA," said Mhora Samuel, director of The Theatres Trust. "Energising Culture will guide many more theatres to make the right energy decisions and help them to become more energy efficient." The Energising Culture guide summarises that, “An informed and longer-term approach to energy strategy and management has the potential to save money, drive innovation and catalyse the business relationships and ideas that are necessary conditions for sustainable and resilient businesses”.
Meanwhile, the hospitality/catering industry has been given similar advice in the form of a guide launched by the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA) and Space Catering. Heeding the advice could well pay dividends, both in energy and power reduction and in savings on energy bills. The Carbon Trust found that energy used in catering accounts for 4-6 per cent of operating costs and around 20 million tonnes of food waste is created every year in the UK by the food service sector.
"Chefs and restaurateurs are always looking for simple solutions to difficult challenges," said Mark Linehan, managing director of the SRA. “This guide provides them with a straightforward, easy to read guide to sustainable kitchen equipment that the SRA believes will be of huge interest and practical use to any restaurant that takes seriously its environmental responsibilities."
