The Carbon Trust has announced plans to encourage 24 public sector organisations to cut their carbon emissions, and therefore reduce electricity costs, by as much as 25 per cent over the next five years, reports voltage optimisation technology provider EcoAdapt (http://www.ecoadapt.co.uk).
Research carried out by the Carbon Trust revealed that the public sector in the UK is responsible for a staggering 23 million tonnes of carbon emissions every year, amounting to an energy bill of around £5 billion. Given this significant carbon footprint, the Carbon Trust has signed up 24 organisations within the public sector to a five-year action plan with the goal of cutting emissions by a quarter. The organisations include high profile bodies such as the British Museum, Kent Police and Lincolnshire county council.
The Carbon Trust, which acts as consultants to the public sector on a commercial basis, has put together an energy management and carbon reduction programme for the 24 organisations. It believes that £1.5 billion in investment could reduce the public sector’s annual energy bill by £500 million, with ROI being seen as soon as three years into the programme. The wider aim is to help these public sector bodies to reduce carbon emissions and maximise their energy efficiency.
Head of public sector at the Carbon Trust, Tim Pryce told the environmentally-focused news website, BusinessGreen, "We know from past experience that it is possible to identify and implement significant cost and carbon savings relatively quickly...There is a lot you can do to save energy even before you have to invest anything. Once that is done we will look at more ambitious measures such as recladding for buildings from the 1960s and 70s, installation of renewable heat and electricity technologies, and putting in green procurement programmes to tackle scope 3 emissions."
While voltage optimisation has not yet been explicitly named as part of this public sector programme, the fact that it is energy saving technology which provides savings of up to 18% means it could be a key factor in the programme’s success.
